Four-Membered Rings With Two Nitrogen Atoms
Résumé
For the last 50 years, a multitude of methods have been developed to access various saturated and unsaturated four-membered rings containing two nitrogen atoms. Among the different combinations of these heterocycles, the saturated 1,2- and 1,3-diazetidines have been particularly studied. Their close structural similarity with β-lactam antibiotics makes them interesting compounds for medicinal chemistry. Moreover, 1,3-diazetidinediones have found wide applications as building blocks in polymer industry. The present chapter is focused on the research progress made between 2006 and 2019 but earlier aspects are also included to provide continuity and a better understanding of this topic.
