Résumé

We publish here a sermon attributed to Robert Holcot, an English Dominican preacher active from 1331 to 1344. Preserved in manuscript 342 at the Bibliothèque municipale de Toulouse, this academic discourse introduces a lost commentary of the Book of Genesis. It must have been delivered in a conventual context, given the diversity of ages and occupations of its clerical audience. It contains several notable traits that can be described as pre-humanistic: affirmation of the superiority of the Greeks over the Latins, praise of grammar over any other discipline, emphasis on the narrativity of Scripture, admiration for the ancient philosophical schools. Among the sources cited, several exempla come from Aulus Gellius’s Attic Nights.
