Surviving the Disaster: the Use of Psyche in 1 Pet. 3.20
Résumé
This article addresses the problem of dealing with Greek philosophy when commenting on the New Testament, focusing on one specific point: the use of psyche in 1Pet. 3:20, where the word designates unambiguously and exclusively human beings. This specific meaning cannot be traced back to any philosophical background. By contrast, the second part of this paper takes advantage of the widely recognized affinity between 1Pet. 3:20 and Wis. 14:5-6 to shed some light on topics associated with the hotly debated pericope of 1Pet. 3:17-22, keeping psyche as a breadcrumb trail.
