Agrobacterium-Mediated Transformation of Medicago truncatula

Résumé

Legumes occupy a very important place in agriculture, following onlycereals. Because of their protein-rich nature, the grain legumes became themainstay of vegetarian food across the world, particularly in India. Apartfrom this, nonvegetarians around the world are slowly changing their foodchoices because of the risks associated with animal-based diets. Hence, there is a need to rectify deficiencies in legume proteins like insufficientavailability of essential amino acids and to improve the quality and quantityof proteins, making them more suitable for human consumption. Besidesconsumption by humans, forage legumes are important as cattle feed. Simi-lar to the value addition of making them suitable as a major vegetarian dietcomponent, there is an urgent need to improve the forage legumes in termsof protein quality and quantity, reduced lignin content, and so on, makingthem easily digestible by cattle. Besides these very important economic as-pects, legumes are a source of timber, high-quality wood, paper pulp, oil,and so on. In addition, legumes have the unique quality of fixing atmo-spheric nitrogen, making their cultivation advantageous in enriching thesoil organically. Hence, this group of plants deserves appropriate attentionfrom scientists, and the present treatment,Handbook of New Technologiesfor the Genetic Improvement of Legumes,is highly justified. As the title indicates, this book serves as a reference for researchers in-terested in legume genetic manipulation, besides offering protocols andother practical aspects that are useful to young workers who want to enterthe field of legume biotechnology. The contributors to this compendium in-cludes a battery of experts drawn from all over the world, making it reallyvaluable. It is heartening to note that the volume has been edited by my long-termassociate, Dr. P. B. Kirti, who worked with me onBrassicagenetic manipu-lation at the National Research Centre for Plant Biotechnology, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, and is at present practicing legumegenetic manipulation at the University of Hyderabad.
