Technical behaviors and subsistence strategies on the Mousterian open-air site of Latrote (Saint-Gein, Landes, France)

The site of Latrote (Saint-Gein), located atop an eminence on the right bank of the Adour, was the subject of a preventive archaeology excavation covering 5.000 m2 as part of construction work for the A65 motorway. It consists of a scatter of objects that lie at the top of a brown pedocomplex which developed on sandy deposits at the southern fringes of the geological formation known as the Sable des Landes. Preliminary results from the geoarchaeological analysis highlight the intricate taphonomic history of the site and the reworking of the original assemblage. This Mousterian industry, made primarily on quartzite and flint, falls within isotopic stage 3. All the different stages of the reduction sequence were carried out in situ on locally and regionally sourced blocs of raw material. The main chaîne opératoire is geared towards flake production, with debitage methods varying according to the type of material. In the case of quartzite pieces, the main objective is to obtain flakes which are either left blank or rarely retouched, such as denticulates. Where flint is concerned, flakes are often transformed into tools, mostly scrapers. Shaping sequences (façonnage) for the production of heavy tools and bifacial pieces are generally carried out on quartzite, although some bifaces are crafted from non-local flint. Petrographic and techno-economic studies bring to light a complex territorial network of raw material circulation from the south and the Pyrenean foothills, as well as raw material sources just to the north and east of the site. A functional approach applied to some flint objects suggests a possible specialisation of the site in terms of activities related to butchery. However, the numerous raw pebbles, cores, hammers, debitage products and tools are consistent with a broader gamut of activities and a (possibly repeated) seasonal occupation. The techno-typological criteria together with OSL and TL dates, as well as main circulation routes, argue in favour of the site of Latrote belonging to the techno-complex qualified as a “Mousterian with cleavers”, which was up until now limited to the Basque Country and Cantabria.
