Functional and behavioural correlates of shared neuronal noise variability in vision and visual cognition

Résumé

Sensory and cognitive neuronal population information capacity are thought to vary as a function of shared neuronal variability between neurons. This noise correlation varies with behaviour. Here, we review data on the contribution of noise correlation to visual processing and perception. We first cover the functional and structural determinants of shared neuronal variability and its contribution to overall neuronal ensemble information capacity during the processing of visual information. In a second part, we discuss the top-down cognitive modulators of noise correlations during visual information processing, such as attention, working memory, cognitive engagement or learning. We then cover the multiple timescales at which noise correlations have been reported to vary and how they relate to different cognitive mechanisms. In conclusion, we highlight the extreme flexibility of this neuronal parameter and we propose a general model for multiple sources of control of neuronal noise correlations and hence of overall neuronal information capacity.
