The ethnographic survey as a means to evaluate the postures and opinions regarding animal pests
Some wild taxa are legally classified as pests. This classification stems from a certain ideology on the relationship
between man and nature, and challenges humanities and social sciences, in particular the philosophy of science
and anthropology. It also pertains to the history of hunting as an ancestral practice linked to rurality and which,
today, seeks to assert its legitimacy. The study of the representations, postures and opinions of the French with
regard to some so-called harmful mammals and birds has been apprehended by the ethnographic survey whose
methods and specificities are described and discussed. Without going into the results of the study here, we
show that the application of ethnobiology to highlight the relations between the French and their surrounding
wildlife, especially pests, is particularly relevant.
