Effects of the microstructure of random media on the propagation of coherent waves

Résumé

Multiple scattering of waves arises in all fields of physics either in periodic or random media. For random media the organization of the microstructure has effects on the propagation of coherent waves. Using a recent exact resolution method called MuScat and different homogenization theories, the effects of the microstructure on the effective wavenumber are investigated over a large frequency range. The positions of scatterers are computed using a random draw considering an exclusion distance b between two scatterers in order to avoid their overlapping. Among homogenization models, we chose two models that contain explicitly a parameter similar to b. The first model is the one presented by Derode et al and named ?Keller? for reasons explained in ref. [1]. The second model was derived by Fikioris and Waterman (FW) [2]. Comparisons between results of effective wavenumber calculated by Muscat with both homogeneization models show that both models appears to be very efficient at high frequency and high concentrations. Moreover, increasing the configurational constraint makes the media more transparent for low frequencies and less for high frequencies. [1] A. Derode, V. Mamou and A. Tourin, Phys. Rev.
