Numerical and experimental study of coherent waves in highly concentrated materials

Résumé

This study deals with the propagation of coherent waves propagating in a heterogeneous slab made of a high concentration of parallel steel cylinders immersed in water. The effective wavenumber of the coherent wave is studied through different ways. First, experiments are performed through a water tank containing few hundred cylinders with a control of their positions. Then, using the same positions, the numerical method MuScat, based on the calculation of the scattered waves by each cylinder and the use of the addition theorem, is used to determine the effective properties of the coherent waves. Finally, the effective wavenumber is calculated using the homogeneization model derived by Fikioris and Waterman (FW). Results are obtained for different concentration of scatterers up to 60%. As expected Muscat predicts very similar results to the experimental ones. Surprisingly the FW model appears to describe very well the propagation of coherent waves up to very large concentrations (φ = 55%), when this model is commonly assumed to be inefficient for studying such concentrated media.
