Ammonia production using non-platinum group metal electrocatalysts in three-dimensional electrodes

Résumé

Electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation is attracting attention as alternative to alleviate the high energy demand of centralized ammonia production through the Haber-Bosch process. Nitrogen (N2) electroreduction present several challenges given the inert character and low solubility of this N-source. Nitrate is an untapped N-source that is present in many water sources. Indeed, nitrate is considered one of the top-10 pollutants in the US and has been associated to health risks including cancer and methemoglobinemia. Thus, ammonia production from nitrate-laden wastewater could emerge as a sustainable source where the pollutant is treated to produce an added-value product. Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate is a promising method for resource recovery. However, the main limitation arises from the reliance of non-sustainable and expensive platinum based electrocatalysts. This research explores the use of a metallic 3D configuration such as nickel and copper foam modified with non-platinum group metal (nPGM) nanoparticles through electrodeposition. Performance of three-dimensional nano-enabled electrodes was benchmarked in terms of different engineering figures of merit based on product selectivity, ammonia yield, kinetics, and electrical energy per order for effective electrosynthesis of ammonia from solutions containing environmentally relevant concentrations of 30 mg L-1 NO3--N at pH 7. Earth-abundant materials such as copper, nickel, cobalt, and tin were evaluated and compared with platinum configuration. Earth-abundant bimetallic nanocomposites electrodes with higher performance than PGM electrocatalysts where identified. Outstanding 90% conversion NO3- in 120 min with higher (~85%) ammonia selectivity than Pt were identified. These encouraging outcomes emphasize the potential of nPGM bimetallic electrodes to treat contaminated water sources with nitrate, while allowing a sustainable decentralized ammonia recovery.
