Chapter Nine. Education and Social Fluidity in Contemporary Italy: An Analysis of Cohort Trends

Résumé

In this chapter we assess the contribution of education to changes in social fluidity in Italy over the twentieth century. First, we show that the overall association between social origins and occupational destinations displays a strong inertia in the Italian case, but that some significant changes in the direction of increasing social fluidity have occurred. Second, we consider three distinct pathways that could relate changes in educational participa-tion to changes in social fluidity: changes in educational inequality, changes in the returns to education, and the compositional effects associated with educational expansion (Breen 2010). Finally, we consider whether, over and above the contribution of education, social fluidity has been affected by changes in the direct influence of social origins on class attainment. This chapter is organised as follows. First, we outline the main struc-tural and institutional factors shaping trends in education and social mobil-ity in Italy and derive our main hypotheses. We then present the data and variables used for the analyses and illustrate the trends in absolute mobility. In the subsequent sections we present the results concerning relative mobil-ity among men and women. Finally, we compare our findings with those of previous mobility studies and discuss our main conclusions.
