Abstract

In this paper, we develop the concept of "composed instruments". We will look at this idea from two perspectives: the design of computer systems in the context of live performed music and musicological considerations. A historical context is developed. Examples will be drawn from recent compositions. Finally basic concepts from computer science will be examined for their relation ship to this concept.
