Synthesis of ternary copper particles/poly (para-phenylenediamine)/carbon nanofibers nanocomposite for direct methanol fuel cell application

Résumé

The continued consumption of fossil Fuels generates many problems related to the pollution of the environment and the climatic warming. Thus, the development of renewable and green energy has become necessary to limit these problems. Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFCs) have recently received wide attention in many applications due to their high energy density, simple operation and environment-friendly use [1]. In this Work, a new nanocomposite of carbon nanofibers (CNFs), para-phenylenediamine (pPD), and Copper particles (CuPs) has been synthesized on carbon paste electrode (CPE) for the electro-oxidation of methanol. In this strategy, the CPE was modified by CNFs using a drop-coating method. After that, the pPD polymer was formed on the surface of CPE/CNF electrode by cyclic voltammetry technique. Finally, the CuPs were deposited on the surface by electro-deposition. The surface morphologies of the prepared electrodes surface were examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The electrochemical properties of the modified electrodes were studied in ferro-ferric cyanide solution by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), showing that CNF/PpPD/CuPs nanocomposite acts as an efficient electron mediator to catalyze the reactions at the surface. The electro-oxidation of methanol on the surface of the modified electrode in alkaline solution was investigated by CV. Different parameters that affect the electro-catalytic activity such as polymer film thickness, methanol concentration and accumulation time of CuPs were reported. The obtained results show that the modified electrode possesses good electro-catalytic activity and stability during the oxidation of methanol in alkaline medium with a high concentration that goes to 3M.?? The proposed prepared electrode can be used as an anode in methanol fuel cells. References: 1. Elbasri, M; El Rhazi, M, Materials Today: Proceedings. 2015, 2(9), 4676 – 4683.
