Material sustainability and EQCM exploration. A pertinent coupling?

Material sustainability studies is of prime interest in different domains of application due to major environmental issue. Most are solved by using well adapted protective films in order to limit the material degradation. Nevertheless, in some cases the efficiency is not enough and it is well suitable to have a deep exploration of what happens during this degradation process. In this case, it is of prime importance to examine the various reactions occurring at the material/solution interface. For that, the EQCM tool (Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance) appears as very well adapted as very sensitive from an electrochemical and gravimetric point of view, with a reasonable time resolution. In this case, by respecting some limitations, real parameters related to corrosion process can be estimated. In this presentation, various applications of this tool will be given in the material sustainability domain where different materials were examined. Nevertheless, in a first part, key equations will be described concerning the EQCM system to have a better ideas of the performances of this sensor. Basic equations with their conditions of use will be given and some equipment will be also presented.
