Wet lamination of Micro-Fibrillated Celluloses, a new concept for paper surface treatment

Abstract

Micro-Fibrillated Celluloses (MFC) are materials of interest for barrier applications. However, due to their cost, low solids and high viscosity, MFC are often either difficult to apply at paper surface or not cost competitive. CTP and CNRS have developed a new concept, the MFC wet lamination technology, to deposit a MFC layer at the surface of paper. The resulting MFC stratified material offers a biobased material with superb oxygen, grease and mineral oil barrier. The patented MFC wet lamination technology has been checked at laboratory scale and is now under development at pilot scale. This presentation introduces, for the first time, the technology, underlines its competitive advantages and give insights on the material performances.
