Epigraphic harvest at the Dead Sea: a bilingual Graeco-Aramaic inscription and other Christian epitaphs from Zoora in Palaestina Tertia

Abstract

This paper presents seven Christian funerary stelae that were recently discovered in southern Jordan at Ġawr al-Ṣāfī, the ancient Zoora in Palaestina Tertia. Six of them bear ordinary Greek epitaphs. The seventh is much more outstanding, as its inscription is written in both Greek and Aramaic. This monument dated to 417 AD is also unique in that it testifies to the use of the Syriac alphabet within the local Christian community in late antiquity.
