              <p>This study provides new information on the dynamics of the initial lobe, which originates from the initial oxide layer covering the particle. It shows that, contrary to popular belief, the initial alumina lobe does not remain intact throughout the life of the droplet, as suggested by numerical simulations. In fact, it is gradually consumed. This lobe is an essential distinguishing feature compared to the combustion of a hydrocarbon droplet and its influence is known to produce micrometric residues. The rate at which this lobe shrinks is directly influenced by the availability of gaseous aluminum in the vicinity of the droplet. The process is particularly slow in nitrogen-rich environments. The study also provides a better understanding of the final stage of the particle, which begins with the formation of a protective layer of alumina or oxynitride. The presence of nitrogen significantly affects the initiation of this coating, leading to spinning and jetting. This study identifies the origin of these two phenomena, in particular jetting, and provides quantitative data on their implications in complex systems involving particle suspensions.</p>
