Variability of HV on noise and earthquake during the seismic sequence of Mw 7.2 Nippes, Haiti, earthquake (August 14th, 2021)

Résumé

The August 14th 2021 Mw 7.2 Nippes, Haiti, earthquake is the second major event to strike southern Haiti this century, 11 years after the devastating Mw7.0 in 2010. The large magnitude earthquake and the possibility to access seismic data recorded since 2019 led us to investigate the variability of the site resonance frequency with time and with the shaking level, by means of the Horizontal-toVertical spectral-ratio analysis on continuous noise and on earthquakes (https://doi.org/10.1785/0220220115). At the time of the mainshock, two seismic networks were installed in the area: short-period sensors as part of a citizen seismology experiment (code HY, 2019; https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abn1045) and broad-band stations installed after the 2010 earthquake (code CN). Moreover, broadband stations of the Z2 Haiti network were deployed after the Nippes earthquake during two years. Collection and standardization of existing continuous data recordings have been made difficult by sensor heterogeneity, limited operativity and logistic problems of the stations. Despite these limitations, we could analyze 3 years of data and hundreds of earthquakes, by using a significantly improved earthquake catalog for Haiti and a crustal velocity model available for the area (https://doi.org/10.1785/0220230059; https://doi.org/10.1785/0120220128). Preliminary results show large site response at several locations and for frequency range of engineering interest, but little evidence of resonance frequency variability due to the strongest shocks. Seasonal variability is also not evident because of the absence of winter/summer seasonality at these latitudes.
