Greek -ιον Personal Names: A Morphological and Semantic Study

Les anthroponymes grecs en -ιον : étude morphologique et sémantique

Résumé

Personal names in -ιον appear in Attic during the 5th c. BC, and then spread out in the whole Hellenic world. One can find -ιον diminutives of simple and compound names, which are mostly feminine names. The addition of -ιον to other suffixes triggers some diminutive complex suffixes (‑ίδιον, ‑άριον, ‑ύλ(λ)ιον, ‑άκιον). The creation of personal names in -ιον originates from a hypocoristic pragmatic use, and was boosted by the use of ‑ιον common nouns as personal names. The diminutive and eventual hypocoristic values of ‑ιον developed from the primitive notion of origin and parenthood.
