Electrical and thermal aspects of induction melting in cold crucible
Induction is a method for heating electrically conductive materials and owning numerous advantages, mainly related to the ease and flexibility of use. It allows to focus on small volumes extremely high powers. So, heating times are very low. Moreover, depending on the choice of the frequency, the heated zones may be located in the bulk or at the surface only. This is a very reproducible heating system whose control is provided by adjusting the current in the inductor. The applications of induction heating are multiple : it can preferentially perform a surface treatment of the material (high frequency) or a heart treatment (low frequency). It also allows localized treatment as in welding, brazing or annealing problems. In addition to the heat treatments, induction allows the fusion of more or less conductive materials (metals, semiconductors, glasses,…) and the development of alloys.
