A SHORT HISTORY OF VETERINARY CATARACT SURGERY, IN FRANCE
UNE « BRÈVE » HISTOIRE DE LA CHIRURGIE DE LA CATARACTE EN MÉDECINE VÉTÉRINAIRE, EN FRANCE A "SHORT" HISTORY OF VETERINARY CATARACT SURGERY, IN FRANCE
Résumé
Cataracts are the main cause of blindness in both humans and animals. In both cases, and whatever the cause,
it is treated surgically. Not surprisingly, the comparative history of cataract surgery in both humans and animals
sh ows simila rities, reciprocal c ontributions and enr ichment for the mutual benefit of patients, both human and animal. Two techniques have coexisted in humans and animals : the couching technique and the extraction technique. The former has been used since Antiquity, while the latter developed from the 18th century onwards. The extraction technique now prevails. The mechanization of the latter, thanks to phacoemulsification, has also made results less operator-dependent and therefore more accessible to the many surgeons of both medicines.
