Résumé

Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean imports are found in limited quantities in the coastal sites of the Gulf during the Hellenistic period. Over the past five years, excavations at Thaj (aš-Šarqiyya, Saudi Arabia) conducted by CNRS (UMR 8167 Orient et Méditerranée) and the Saudi Heritage Commission, with the support of the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, have yielded a significant pottery assemblage comprising imported Mediterranean amphorae and so-called 'Atticizing ware' dating from the 4th to 2nd century BC. The diverse typological range and varied origins of the studied wares found at an inland site located more than 100 km from the coastline suggest strong long-distance economic relations with the center of the Hellenistic world and a significant influence of the Eastern Mediterranean economy on the city of Thaj. The objective of this paper is to present the origins of the imported pottery classes and initiate a discussion on the nature of this exchange. Furthermore, the authors aim to explore the way through which Mediterranean goods reached the site, considering the distribution patterns of similar imports along the Euphrates and Arabian routes, and comparing the material from Thaj with assemblages from other sites in the Near East and the Gulf.
