The Contribution of the Palmyra Portrait Project to Research on the Epigraphy of Palmyra
Résumé
This paper presents a review of recent publications on Palmyrene epigraphy. First, it gives examples of Greek and mostly Aramaic inscriptions from Palmyra discovered before 2010, or preserved in museums around the world, some never published before. Second, it underlines the contribution of the Palmyra Portrait Project to epigraphy. Initially dedicated to the study of portraits and funerary sculptures, the project has proved to be an important tool for our knowledge of the epigraphy of ancient Palmyra. For instance, it could lead in the coming years to breakthroughs in the research on the palaeography of the inscriptions of Palmyra.
