Grammaticalisation et changements constructionnels à l’épreuve de l’évolution de l’ordre des mots en français
Abstract
This article deals with a major change in the history of French, the progressive reduction of the six possible combinations of Subject, Verb and Object at the benefit of the SVO order.
After a quick survey of the characteristics of the different patterns and of their evolution, this change is put to the test of the grammaticalization framework .
It is shown that, while the evolution of word order as a whole can be interpreted as the syntactization of discourse strategies, a more detailed analysis shows that some of the supposed mechanisms at work reveal irrelevant, which results in the impossibility to provide a unified analysis. The change is then addressed within the framework of a constructional approach, sarting with defining what is meant by “construction” in this precise context.
The study shows that two of the six constructions have totally disappeared, three have undergone noticeable formal and functional constructional changes, while [SVO], which has been prevailing since the beginning of French, has never been associated with any particular pragmatic effects. We conclude that the order of major constituents in French is now structured in a network of four meso-constructions, one of which is quantitatively and qualitatively unmarked, while the other three, whiche are in the minority and formally constrained, induce meaning effects.
Cet article s’attache à l’étude d’un changement majeur dans l’histoire du français, la réduction progressive des six combinaisons possibles des constituants Sujet, Verbe et Objet au profit du schéma SVO. Après un rappel des caractéristiques des différents schémas, et de leur évolution, ce changement est mis à l’épreuve du cadre de la grammaticalisation. Il est montré que, si l’évolution de l’ordre des mots dans son ensemble peut être interprétée comme la syntactisation de stratégies discursives, une analyse plus en détail se heurte à la pertinence plus ou moins grande des mécanismes supposés à l’oeuvre, ce qui ne permet pas de proposer une analyse unifiée. Le changement est ensuite abordé dans le cadre d’une approche constructionnelle, après avoir défini ce que l’on entend par « construction » dans ce cadre. L’étude met en évidence que deux des six constructions ont totalement disparu et que trois ont connu des changements constructionnels notables sur les plan formel et fonctionnel, tandis que la dernière, [SVO], majoritaire dès les débuts du français, n’a jamais été associée à des effets pragmatiques particuliers. Nous concluons que l’ordre des constituants majeurs du français est désormais structuré en un réseau de quatre méso-constructions, l’une d’entre elle étant non marquée, d’un point de vue quantitatif et qualitatif, alors que les trois autres, minoritaires et contraintes formellement, induisent des effets de sens.
